Boehly could finally revive Mason Mount if Chelsea hire “world-class” 50 y/o leader - opinion

Chelsea are reportedly interested in enticing Mauricio Pochettino with a deal to assume the managerial role at Stamford Bridge, with the Argentine boss out of work since being relieved of his duties as Paris Saint-Germain boss last summer.

According to reports stemming from Spain, the former Tottenham Hotspur manager has been distinguished as an option to replace Graham Potter in the Blues dugout, with Chelsea languishing in mid-table mediocrity and out of both domestic cup competitions by the hand of Manchester City.

Owner Todd Boehly has maintained his faith in Potter, who took over from the dismissed Thomas Tuchel in the early phase of the campaign after doing a wonderful job at Brighton & Hove Albion, but there is a growing sense that the next two matches will determine his future in west London.

Indeed, with the outfit trailing Borussia Dortmund after the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie after facing struggling Leeds United in the league, continuing the woeful form that has left the club holding just two victories from 15 matches across all competitions could pave the way for someone of Pochettino’s ilk.

Could Pochettino really get Mount firing?

At PSG, the Argentinian manager recorded a points-per-match (PPM) average of 2.15, winning Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France; this followed his tenure in north London that saw him strike an impressive 1.84 average with Spurs across 293 matches.

And while he didn’t clinch silverware with the Lilywhites, Pochettino took the club to their first Champions League final and secured four consecutive top-four finishes.

According to one tactical analysis examining his time at Tottenham, the former Southampton head coach utilised swift, diagonal transitional play to bypass his opponents and instigate promising openings, and given Chelsea’s wide flanks consisting of the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke, to name a few, this could be aptly emulated.

And by harnessing the dynamic capabilities of Mason Mount in the centre, Pochettino could make some valuable inroads into rekindling the club’s deserted swagger and cohesion.

Mount has been culpable for some of Chelsea’s downward spiral this year, with the 24-year-old “enduring his least effective season”, according to The Athletic, for the Blues and out of contract at the end of next season, opening the door for increasing speculation over his future and attracting interest from Liverpool.

But given Pochettino’s past success in nurturing the best out of fellow England international Dele Alli, who has since fallen from prominence with an emphatic thud after his former manager’s departure from Tottenham, Mount could yet find a pathway back to the limelight in west London.

Alli scored 55 goals and supplied 52 assists from just 194 outings under Pochettino’s wing, and given the 50-year-old’s man-management skills, he could certainly look to rejuvenate Mount – who plays in a similar role – and ensure he does not fall further from his once admirable standing in the Blues team.

Dubbed “world-class” by Dean Saunders, Mount still boasts an average match rating of 7.07, as per Sofascore, in the English top-flight this season, despite his recent struggles, but his 1.4 shots and 1.3 key passes per game are the lowest of any season in a Chelsea shirt for the phenom.

And Pochettino, who has himself been hailed as “world-class” by talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara, could spark life back into the man once at the heart of all Chelsea’s success.
