Wicky says MLS strugglers Sporting KC must eliminate defensive errors

Sporting Kansas City must learn from the mistakes that allowed Los Angeles FC to tear their defence apart in last week's 4-0 defeat, Raphael Wicky has acknowledged. Sporting KC suffered a thumping loss last time out, keeping them rooted to the bottom of the Western Conference despite beating Minnesota United 2-1 in their previous game. Kansas City go up against the Houston Dynamo, who sit fifth in the standings, next time out at Sporting Park. And Wicky is clear on where his team must improve.  "It's about the whole team. We have to learn from that. We have to learn that in certain moments we cannot do certain things or force plays," he told reporters. "LAFC are obviously an extreme example, with extreme quality, but in MLS, when you force things, a lot of teams in MLS have fast strikers, fast wingers and they try to counter-attack.  "We also do that in moments. Everyone has to learn. For this game especially, we said, 'let's not f...

Barnes backed to provide more ‘special moments’ after penning Newcastle extension

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has backed Harvey Barnes to continue providing "special moments" after the winger signed a new long-term contract with the club. Barnes' previous deal had two years left to run, and while the length of his new agreement has not been confirmed, he has now committed his future to the Magpies. Having joined from Leicester City in 2023, Barnes has scored 30 goals from 120 games for Newcastle in all competitions. The 28-year-old netted 16 goals and provided six assists in 57 appearances for Newcastle last campaign.  No player provided more goal involvements for the Magpies, with Anthony Gordon also boasting 22. Gordon, who has since joined Barcelona, was also the only Newcastle player to outscore Barnes, netting 17 times in all competitions. Barnes' 57 appearances were also the most of any player in Howe's squad, even if 24 of those came from the bench, and the Newcastle boss is sure he will continue to play a key role ...

Courtois excited by Belgium’s appointment of ‘top coach’ Van Bommel

Thibaut Courtois has welcomed the appointment of Mark van Bommel as Belgium's new head coach but admits he is still unsure about his international future. Rudi Garcia opted to leave Belgium at the end of his contract this month following their quarter-final exit from the World Cup, at the hands of eventual winners Spain. The Red Devils then swiftly appointed Van Bommel as his successor, as he signed a contract through to the European Championships in 2028. He will officially begin his role on August 15. This will be Van Bommel's fourth managerial role, and his first since spending two years in the Belgian Pro League with Royal Antwerp between 2022 and 2024.  During his time in Belgium, he won the Belgian league title, the Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup. He won the top-flight crown in his first-ever season as manager, starting that 2022-23 campaign with nine straight victories.  Courtois admitted he was not surprised by the appointment and believes it is a go...

Mount loving new Man Utd role alongside Santos

Mason Mount is confident he and Andrey Santos can form a strong midfield partnership at Manchester United following early success in pre-season. Mount joined United three years ago but has struggled to nail down a place in the starting line-up, with injuries limiting him to just 72 appearances in that time. A lot of talk has been centred on United's midfield this summer, following the exit of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte's knee injury that will keep him sidelined for most of the 2026-27 season. The Red Devils have already signed Santos and Youri Tielemans, and they are expected to add another, with the likes of Bournemouth duo Alex Scott, Tyler Adams and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni being linked with a move. But Mount is an option already available to Michael Carrick, and he has been used alongside Santos in both pre-season games against Wrexham and Rosenborg, respectively. "I've known Andrey for a while," said Mount. "I've watched hi...

Palhinha hints at return to Portugal amid Bayern exit speculation

Image
Joao Palhinha has hinted that he will return to Portugal in the future, but refused to confirm if he will be signing for Benfica this summer. Palhinha has been heavily linked with a move away from Bayern Munich in recent weeks after he failed to nail down a place with the Bundesliga giants. The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Tottenham, making 45 appearances in all competitions and scoring the goal that secured their top-flight status, with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day sending West Ham down at their expense. Palhinha had spoken of his desire to make the move to north London permanent, but that fell through, with reports then emerging that he could return to his homeland and reunite with his former Fulham boss Marco Silva. He has two years left on his current Bayern deal, but when asked if he would be on the move this transfer window, Palhinha refused to speculate. "I'm going back to Bayern, you know. It's been quite a saga, but I'm a Bay...

Kafaji leaves Arsenal for London City Lionesses

London City Lionesses have completed the signing of Sweden forward Rosa Kafaji from Women's Super League rivals Arsenal. Kafaji joined the Gunners in August 2024 from BK Hacken and scored her only WSL goal for the club in a 2-0 victory at West Ham that October. After struggling for regular minutes at the Emirates Stadium, Kafaji spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Brighton, netting twice in 19 WSL appearances for the Seagulls. Now, she has penned a three-year deal with the ambitious Lionesses, who have made headlines by bringing in two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas and former England goalkeeper Mary Earps ahead of their second season in the WSL. London City's first campaign at the top table resulted in a sixth-place finish, and owner Michele Kang has targeted Champions League qualification in the coming seasons. Liberali turns down AC Milan return to join Fabregas’ Como

Mattia Liberali believes Cesc Fabregas is the perfect manager to aid his development after joining Como from Serie B side Catanzaro on Wednesday.  Liberali has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Como, who will play in the Champions League this season, after his €6m release clause was activated.  The 19-year-old, who rose through AC Milan's academy ranks, was reportedly wanted by his former club, but he has instead chosen to sign for Como.  He made 29 league appearances for Catanzaro in 2025-26, scoring three goals and providing four assists to help his team finish fifth and in the promotion play-offs first round.  Catanzaro played out a 2-2 draw on aggregate against Monza across both legs of the play-off final, but because their opponents finished higher in the league table, they were promoted to Serie A having been relegated the season before. "It's a real thrill to be able to start my journey at Como,"...

‘Eager’ Elliott will get his chance at Liverpool, says Iraola

Andoni Iraola insisted Harvey Elliott will be given the opportunity to fight for his place at Liverpool after a difficult loan spell with Aston Villa last season.  Elliott joined Unai Emery's side on a season-long loan after falling out of favour under Arne Slot, but failed to make the desired impact at Villa Park.  The 23-year-old, fresh from starring in England's Under-21 European Championship success last summer, managed just 277 minutes of game time across all competitions.  It is believed that his appearances were limited by a clause in the loan agreement that would trigger Villa's obligation to buy after he made ten outings; he only reached nine. Emery conceded that the situation was affecting the midfielder's development and expressed his sadness about how events unfolded, though Iraola revealed in his first press conference as Liverpool's new boss that Elliott was eager to get himself back into the side.  ...

Saint-Maximin joins Charlotte on designated player contract

Charlotte FC have announced the signing of Allan Saint-Maximin after leaving Ligue 1 side Lens at the end of last season.  Saint-Maximin has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the MLS side, and is signed to a designated player contract, taking the roster spot previously held by Wilfried Zaha. Bellingham could be England’s best ever player, claims Lineker

Gary Lineker suggested Jude Bellingham could be England's greatest ever player, after the midfielder's World Cup heroics against Norway. England were not at their best in Saturday's quarter-final tie at Miami Stadium, but Bellingham delivered once more on the biggest stage. The 23-year-old dragged England level towards the end of the first half, before capitalising on Orjan Nyland's mistake to put the Three Lions ahead in extra time. Bellingham has netted six goals at the 2026 World Cup, none of which have been penalties. This is the joint-most non-penalty goals by an England player in a major tournament, along with Lineker at the 1986 World Cup (six). And Lineker feels Bellingham is establishing himself as the best player England have ever had. "I would go as far as to say I think there's a chance that I think he could well be, or end up being, England's greatest ever footballer. And that is a big shout," Lineker said on The Rest is Football...
