Marseille boss Genesio eager to keep Sunderland target Paxiao

Image
Bruno Genesio said Sunderland target Igor Paxiao is not for sale ahead of Marseille's clash with Monaco. Sunderland are reportedly pushing to sign Paxiao, who joined Marseille from PSV last year. Paxiao registered 18 goal involvements for Marseille last term, scoring 12 and laying on six assists. He ranked second in Marseille's squad, behind Mason Greenwood, for dribbles attempted (110) and completed (35). But Genesio is hopeful Paxiao, who is not fit to feature against Monaco on Sunday due to a thigh issue, will stay put. "No, no, Igor is not being sold," Genesio insisted. Any sale could also be complicated by Marseille's inability to source a replacement for the Brazilian, due to their financial limitations. Gregory Lorenzi, the club's sporting director, said: "Even if we sell a player, we will not be allowed to register a signing. "In practice, several departures would be required before we could make a signing. "I don’t kno...

Moyes confirms Armstrong offer amid Nottingham Forest links

David Moyes confirmed Everton have received an offer for Harrison Armstrong amid speculation of a bid from Nottingham Forest. Armstrong has impressed for the Toffees so far this season and is seen as one of their brightest prospects. The 19-year-old started and played 87 minutes on Saturday as Everton fought back to draw 1-1 with Bournemouth thanks to James Tarkowski's last-gasp leveller. That came after news broke that Forest had lodged a reported £40m bid for the teenager. Everton fans made their displeasure at a potential sale of Armstrong known during the Bournemouth match, but Moyes was unsure if the club would be keeping hold of the midfielder. He said: "There's been an offer. Apart from that, I don't think there’s much else I can say, it's a club decision. "We don't want to lose anybody and we still need to add players to what we've got. I've been saying it for a while." None of the previous...

Arturo Ruiz is the new head coach of Brighton Women after Dario Vidosic's surprising departure. Vidosic, who led Brighton to the Women's FA Cup final last season, stepped down on Friday to "pursue a new opportunity". He is reportedly set to take over National Women's Soccer League side Angel City. Vidosic won 24 of his 59 matches in charge of Brighton, while he averaged 1.2 points per game in the Women's Super League. Varas challenges San Diego to keep pushing up MLS table

Mikey Varas has urged San Diego FC to keep pushing as they look to continue building positive momentum against the LA Galaxy in MLS. After their three-game unbeaten streak ended with a 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers, San Diego bounced back with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids. It is a win that keeps San Diego within touching distance of the playoff places, as they sit 11th in the Western Conference on 27 points, one point behind the teams between seventh and 10th. But Varas is not ready to rest on his laurels, as he urged his team to keep the pressure on the teams above them in the table. "It was a great team win," Varas said of the victory over Colorado. "It starts from a foundation of everybody committed to running hard, to tackling, to pressing, to making big recovery runs because we play against a very good team defending low like warriors, and all of that is the foundation. "When we do that with all the guys committed to it, and we do ...

Moyes targeting strong run in EFL Cup with Everton

David Moyes insisted he wants to go on a "good run" in the EFL Cup with Everton, but would not prioritise the competition over the Premier League. Everton face Preston North End in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday, having started their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Everton have reached the third round of the EFL Cup in each of the last 24 seasons in the competition, a run that has also seen the Toffees win all of their last 15 second round matches, scoring 46 goals and conceding just 12. They have lost just one of their last six matches against Preston across all competitions (W3 D2), keeping a clean sheet in five of those six matches. Each of the last two competitive meetings between Preston and Everton have seen Moyes in the dugout, with the Scot losing 2-0 to the Toffees in the FA Cup fifth round in January 2000 whilst in charge of Preston, and winning 2-0 with Everton in the EFL Cup third round in October 2004. While Moyes wants to b...

Iraola says Liverpool subs will be crucial after Munoz cameo versus Newcastle

Andoni Iraola feels Liverpool's substitutes will be crucial in the early stages of his reign, with the Reds' players still unable to get through a full 90 minutes playing his style of football. Liverpool salvaged a point to open their first Premier League campaign under Iraola on Sunday, with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a 99th-minute penalty in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United. Newcastle had taken the lead early on through Anthony Elanga, with Cody Gakpo levelling for Liverpool early in the second half, only for Joe Willock to immediately put the Magpies 2-1 up. Szoboszlai's last-gasp spot-kick came after substitute Victor Munoz – a former Newcastle transfer target who instead opted to join Liverpool from Osasuna – was clattered in the area by Lewis Hall. And Iraola was pleased with Munoz's cameo off the bench as he highlighted the value of being able to introduce fresh energy against tiring opponents.  "I don't think we deserved to los...

‘Whoever isn’t ready will be pushed towards the exit’ – Spalletti warns Juve of fierce competition

Image
Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti has urged his side to prove themselves ahead of what he expects to be a tightly contested Serie A campaign, beginning with a trip to Frosinone.  The Bianconeri are coming off a largely disappointing 2025-26 campaign, where they fell away in the race for Champions League football late on, settling in the end for a sixth-placed league finish.  Spalletti, who replaced Igor Tudor midway through last season, has overseen a promising pre-season amid a minor squad overhaul, with Guglielmo Vicario, Randal Kolo Muani, Kerim Alajbegovic, Zeki Celik and Jhon Lucumi among the notable arrivals.  Despite those changes, Spalletti believes Juve still have work to do, pointing to the fierce competition in Serie A and the improvements made by rivals Inter, Napoli, AC Milan and Roma.  "The bell has rung, the season has started, and whoever isn't ready will feel themselves getting pushed towards the exit," the Juve boss warned in his pr...

Chivu knows Inter are ‘the team to beat’ ahead of Serie A season opener

Cristian Chivu acknowledges Inter are the team to beat ahead of their opening Serie A match in 2026-27, but he believes the Nerazzurri can still improve following last season's Scudetto triumph. Inter ran away with the title in their first campaign under Chivu in 2025-26, finishing 11 points clear of Napoli, who were defending champions under Antonio Conte. They open the new season against Serie B play-off winners Monza on Saturday, and the Opta supercomputer rates their chances of retaining the title at a league-high 35.1%. Inter saw Denzel Dumfries join Real Madrid, while experienced defenders Matteo Darmian, Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi also departed.  But they have also been busy with their incomings, with Djed Spence, John Stones, Aleksandar Stankovic and Ivan Provedel all arriving, while Manuel Akanji's loan from Manchester City was made permanent. "We are aware that we are always the team to beat and no one will give us anything," Ch...

Aston Villa move for Zion Suzuki amid Martinez uncertainty

Until recently, Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki seemed very likely to leave Parma for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, but the Ligue 1 champions eventually gave up on their pursuit. Now, according to Talksport , Aston Villa are working to sign the 23-year-old, while reports in Italy suggest this development has rekindled the hope of Juventus signing Emiliano Martinez. Juventus were themselves linked with Suzuki, but earlier this month, head coach Luciano Spalletti dismissed that story , claiming the Serie A giants deem him too expensive. Though born in the USA, Suzuki rose through the youth ranks with Urawa Reds in Japan, and spent the second half of 2023-24 with Belgian side Sint-Truiden before joining Parma for just over €8 million the following summer. Over the two years gone since, he’s made a total of 59 club appearances in all competitions, keeping a clean sheet on 13 occasions. He has represented his country 28 times so far, and put in fine performances in thi...

Alonso keen to build Chelsea connection but Fernandez booed in friendly win

Xabi Alonso believes building a connection with the Stamford Bridge faithful will be huge for Chelsea this season, though some supporters booed Enzo Fernandez during Saturday's 3-1 friendly win over Real Sociedad. Morgan Rogers scored his first goal for the Blues just 11 minutes into his home debut, tapping in from close range after Alex Remiro could only parry Joao Pedro's header. La Real levelled through Jon Aramburu on the stroke of half-time, though two Joao Pedro goals – a far-post header and an excellent breakaway strike assisted by Malo Gusto's searching through-ball – secured the victory for Chelsea. Alonso's Blues looked good after naming a strong lineup for their final pre-season tune-up, creating chances worth 1.57 expected goals (xG) to La Real's 0.97. Chelsea also had a 58.9% possession share and created two Opta-defined big chances, while not giving up any to their Spanish opponents.  With Chelsea welcoming back those players ...

Arteta lauds ‘best coach in the history of football’ Guardiola

Mikel Arteta believes Pep Guardiola is "the best coach in the history of football" and praised his impact on the Premier League. For the first time since taking over at Arsenal, Arteta will face a City boss other than Guardiola when the two sides meet in the Community Shield on Sunday. Guardiola left his role as City manager at the end of last season, signing off a trophy-laden tenure with an FA Cup and EFL Cup in his final campaign. Arteta faced Guardiola 18 times across all competitions, though the former City boss won on 11 occasions (D4 L3), including their final meeting, a 2-1 league win in April. Nevertheless, the Arsenal manager managed to win his first Premier League title last season, and he did not hold back in his praise for his former colleague. "I am going to fall short on the way I can praise what he has done," said Arteta. "For the Premier League, for the country, I think he has opened a different way of understanding the game. Dalic appointed new UAE head coach following Croatia exit

Just over a month after stepping down from his position as Croatia's head coach, Zlatko Dalic is back in management after agreeing to take charge of the United Arab Emirates.  Dalic brought an end to his successful nine-year stint with Croatia following their round-of-32 exit at this summer's World Cup, as they lost 2-1 to Portugal.  It was Croatia's worst World Cup campaign under Dalic, who oversaw their historic run to the 2018 final, which they lost 4-2 to France, and a third-place finish at Qatar 2022. The 59-year-old also oversaw two European Championship campaigns after taking charge in 2017, but he never led Croatia beyond the last 16 in that tournament.  He also helped Croatia reach the Nations League final in 2022-23, but they were beaten by Spain in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless draw in normal time.  "Welcome, Zlatko Dalic," the UAEFA said in a statement on social media. Neymar admits retirement an option when Santos contract expires

Neymar admits he could call time on his playing career when his contract with Santos expires in December. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star returned to his first club in January 2025, following an injury-hit stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal. He has scored 14 goals in 29 league matches since returning to Brazil, the most of any Santos player in that span and the joint-eighth most among everyone in Serie A. Neymar's form earned him a recall to the Brazil squad under Carlo Ancelotti, and though he became only the second Selecao player to score at four different World Cups, after Pele, he was unable to prevent their round-of-16 exit at the hands of Norway. Ancelotti was criticised for bringing Neymar on while that last-16 tie was poised at 0-0, and he confirmed after the tournament that his international career was over. He may also have limited time remaining in the club game, with his future uncertain beyond the end of this year.  "I'm not thin...

‘Casemiro said he only wanted to play for the Galaxy’, claims GM

LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz revealed Casemiro told him he "only wanted to play for the Galaxy". Casemiro joined Inter Miami on a one-year deal following his departure from Manchester United this summer, and has an option to extend his stay with the MLS club until 2029. The Brazilian spent four years at United, helping them win the EFL Cup and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford before deciding not to renew his contract. The 34-year-old made his Miami debut last month in their 1-0 win over CF Montreal, while he scored an own goal in his second appearance – a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew last weekend. The Galaxy reportedly had the discovery rights to Casemiro before reaching a settlement with Miami, though MLS have launched an investigation into the matter. Mohamed Salah has not agreed to join Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, according to the club's president Ertugrul Dogan. Salah left Liverpool as a free agent at the end of last season, having reached an agreement to terminate his two-year contract – which he only signed in April 2025 – early. The Egyptian scored 257 goals for Liverpool in 442 games, across all competitions, after joining from Roma in 2017. Only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285) are above Salah in Liverpool's all-time scoring charts, and he is also the Reds' all-time top scorer (191) and assister (93) in the Premier League. Since departing Anfield, the 34-year-old has been strongly linked with several Saudi Pro League clubs, as well as Istanbul giants Besiktas.
