Moyes must "go in for" £50m West Ham target, it could be an "extraordinary" signing - opinion

West Ham United remain keen on a deal to bring Conor Gallagher to the London Stadium on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Dean Jones, who revealed in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that, following a number of reports linking David Moyes with a move for the Chelsea midfielder over the last 24 hours, the 59-year-old has indeed sounded out a move for the England international – and could launch a move for the 22-year-old in the final hours of the window.

Regarding the Hammers’ interest in Gallagher, the transfer insider said: “I am expecting them to do something. I mean, it’s West Ham and they’ve got gaps in the team, so I would say look out for Conor Gallagher.

“They could potentially go in for him again, they’ve already sounded him out and looked at that early on in the month. I think if Gallagher is allowed out, particularly on loan today, then making an easy move across London could suit him, so I think that’s one to look out for.”

“Extraordinary”

Considering just how impressive Gallagher was during a season-long loan spell at Crystal Palace last time out, it is not difficult to understand why Moyes would be interested in a last-minute deal to bring the £50m valued midfielder to east London on deadline day – despite the 22-year-old having been something of a peripheral figure at Chelsea in the current campaign.

Indeed, over his 34 Premier League appearances last season, the £38.5m-rated talent was in astonishing attacking form, bagging eight goals, providing three assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.5 shots, making 1.1 key passes and completing 1.3 dribbles – at a success rate of 57% – per game.

The £50k-per-week midfielder also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 2.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and winning 5.9 duels – at a success rate of 47% – per match, as well as enjoying an average of 51.6 touches, finding his man with 1.4 long balls and completing 25.1 total passes – at a success rate of 81% – per fixture.

These returns saw the four-cap international who former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel dubbed “extraordinary” average an extremely impressive Sofascore statistical rating of 7.08, ranking him as the Eagles’ best performer in the league last time out.

As such, considering just how important a part of a mid-table side Gallagher has very much proven he can be, it would appear an extremely wise move for Moyes to do everything in his power to land the 22-year-old prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline – especially with talismanic West Ham midfielder Declan Rice looking set to leave the club his summer – as he could well be an extraordinary replacement moving forward for the Irons.

And, with David Ornstein recently revealing in a post on Twitter that, unless a club were to meet the England international’s asking price in the coming hours Gallagher will be staying at Stamford Bridge until at least the summer, it would seem as if Moyes must now put his money where his mouth is in order to get a deal over the line this month.
